
Dr James Coulthard is an orthopaedic surgeon servicing Newcastle and the greater Hunter area.
He trained in the Hunter New England Health network and obtained his fellowship from the
Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2018.
In 2019 Dr Coulthard gained further experience in Oxford, UK as a senior clinical fellow in
orthopaedics at the Oxford University Hospitals. After returning to Australia, he
completed a fellowship in adult knee surgery with Dr Peter McEwen at the Mater Hospital
Queensland. He then moved to Perth for twelve months’ further experience in paediatrics at
the Perth Children’s Hospital, focusing on disorders of the hip and knee in adolescents.
Dr Coulthard spends most of his time on the care of the knee in young people and adults and is experienced in joint replacement, ligament and meniscal surgery.
He performs partial and total knee replacement with modern techniques, including the use of
robotic-assisted surgery and has a special interest in enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) programs. These programs allow mobilisation hours after surgery, less use of strong painkillers and shorter stays in hospital.
