Dr Jai Kumar is an orthopaedic surgeon specialising in disorders of the knee and shoulder. His subspeciality interest is in sports arthroscopy and treatment of functional active people and takes a multidisciplinary approach. He was born and raised in Newcastle, NSW, completing undergraduate studies in Science/Law here before completing his medical degree with honours from the University of Sydney. He then completed his general orthopaedic training through the Australian Orthopaedic Association. During his final year, he served as the President of the Australian Orthopaedic Registrars Association (AORA).
Jai has travelled and undertaken training in his specialty area throughout Europe, both early in his career and more recently. He has learnt from his colleagues in various countries including Ireland, Italy, France, England, Scotland, Austria, Switzerland and Belgium. His aim is to offer his patients not only the most advanced techniques but also surgery that draws on a wide breadth of experience. Jai is a firm believer in taking time away from one’s usual daily work routine to immerse oneself in new concepts and techniques. As Roy T. Bennett said “It’s only after you’ve stepped out of your comfort zone that you begin to change, grow, and transform.”
Furthermore, Jai feels that a multidisciplinary approach to total patient care is imperative to obtain optimum outcomes. The role of physiotherapists, sports physicians, coaches, rehabilitation providers and other allied health personnel make up an integral part of his practice and maintaining strong and free-flowing lines of communication is the key to this.
